Breathing is the key to life. Failure to breathe is the key to death.
I have studied Systema for several months now. Breathing is a major part of Systema. As an EMT I understand the importance of oxygen in life. I also understand that without oxygen and breathing there is no life.
When your in a physical altercation you must rember the key to life. If you are physically exerting yourself you must breathe. Breathing does so much for the body. It gives you energy and strength. Breathing also helps you think clearly and make decisions. And the most important thing is breathing keeps you alive.
You nor your body can function properly without proper breathing and oxygenating your body. There is a simple way to learn this for yourself. I was stubborn and did not realize the importance of oxygen in the beginning. My first Systema instructor Sonny Puzikas showed me just how important breathing is through this exercise.
Get into the pushup position. Take a deep breath and fully exhale it. Slowly do one pushup without breathing. Now rest for a few seconds and do it again, but this time do two pushups without breathing. Now repeat this until you have worked yourself up to as manny pushups as you can do without breathing. I made it to 5 without breathing on my first try. If you continue the exercise over time you can increase your stamina.
