The best preparedness blogs out there
Well it’s that time of a year again to get the garden started, but what if your raised beds or gardens are not done yet? Here’s a quick tip for a small portable garden or seed starting bed that’s self watering.
The design is to use 2 of the totes, one gets cut down and inverted to create a void under the soil, a plastic pool skimmer piece sits in this void and allows the soil to be in contained while in contact with the water reservoir so it waters from the bottom. A piece of pvc goes through the soil to fill the water reservoir. This can be done using the shoebox plastic containers or large totes. With the shoebox containers, drill some holes in the bottom, set it back into the lid, usually there is a small foot on the bottom of the boxes so it sits up just a tad to be able to pull the water up into the soil.
If you are planning on starting a garden or just want to do this for fun, I highly suggest you take a look at Josh Mandel’s article on how to do this.
Looks like you can make one of these for around $30.00 buying everything you would need, throw in some seeds or already started plants and instant garden.
